In 2004 she came seventh of 24 in the DHB election, for a seven-member board; the ward system had been dropped.. She also stood for city council, and came seventh, with 5.6% of the votes cast; all successful candidates got between 5% and 8%.
Katy died on December 4, 2016; an obituary was printed on December 7. She had been a city councilor for two terms, from 2004, but lost the third time, when an election-night majority of 23 became a two-vote deficit, and again at the fourth time. She had been a Hutt Valley District Health Board member since it began in 2001; she chaired their community and public health advisory committee.
For tye eight years up to 1990 she had been the New Zealand delegate to the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, and had become chairperson of that body's legislative committee.
She was a founder member of Upper Hutt Skating and Canine Friends to Fergusson, treasurer of the Golden Retriever Club, and involved in Te Marua Golf Club.
She and her husband Bruce were recognized for work in Nepal, sponsoring a family they had met. The Cheboche Area Trust, established in 2006, raised $36 000 when the village was later hit by an earthquake.
The December 21, 2016 'Leader' reported that Forest and Bird wanted to organise a memorial bush walkway.
