Caption: Kiwi Packaging managing director Colin Siddins soon after announcing the Upper Hutt plant would be closing making at least 60 people redundant.

Kiwi Packaging had moved in in August 1985 when match makers Bryant & May moved out; they had been there since 1971.

The company, owned by Amcor, of Australia, had been based in Lower Hutt for eight years, followed by eight in Upper Hutt. They had been making corrugated-cardboard containers for meat, dairy and fruit industries, but demand in the Wellington area had declined. 
 They would be expanding their Hastings plant, and 20 Upper Hutt staff would be offered work there.

Printed in colour in the ‘Leader’ on July 31, 1996.

The site was advertised for sale on September 18.

The July 19, 1988 'Leader' had announced that UEB Packaging was to move from Randwick Road, Moera, to Montgomery Crescent. Kiwi Packaging had vacated the premises and still maintained an Auckland operation; some former Kiwi Packaging staff would be among the 70 staff.

At some stage Bryant & May changed their name to Wilkinson Match.

A June 4, 1980 article on nine redundancies included a comment from the matchmakers' union secretary.
