Wallaceville Country Women's Institute
Content & arrangement
Archives TypeRecordsScope & contentWith the exception of the scrapbook, there are no records for the first 25 years of the Wallaceville CWI's existence (these were possibly passed to the national office).
The scrapbook was created c1975-1976 by Mrs Peggy Vickers of Upper Hutt, an office-holder in the Wallaceville Country Women's Institute. It was used for display and historical interest eg to compare the cost of a cake baked in the 1930s with one baked in the 1970s. There are no entries or receipts for the years 1944-1945. The receipts are from many early Upper Hutt businesses, including D. Clyde (grocer & provision dealer), J.A.Hazelwood & Co. Ltd., F.F.Hercock (General Storekeeper), the Loyal Rose of Sharon Lodge, etc. Inside the front cover are included an invitation to the Wallaceville CWI's 60th birthday on 4 May 1994, and a newspaper clipping about the event.Organisation & ArrangementThe scrapbook has been covered in wallpaper, sellotaped to the front and back covers. The pages have been labelled chronologically, and all receipts for the relevant year included at that page. Receipts were originally positioned using adhesive tape. For the years 1935-1951, and some subsequent receipts, this tape has come loose. Several loose receipts had been placed in the first opening. These have been listed and re-ordered chronologically. Those without dates were left at the front.Early minutes (from 1950) were recorded in books. Between 1975 and 1983 typed minutes were pasted into a book. Thereafter typed sheets were filed into folders. Early minute books included annual reports, minutes of monthly meetings and of AGMs. Later AGM minutes and annual reports were filed separately. This is reflected in the series arrangement. There is no evidence of committee minutes prior to 1984.

HistoryThe Wallaceville Country Women's Institute was established in 1934, and closed in 1995.
Until 1953 the organisation was named the Wallaceville Women's Institute, affiliated to the NZ Federation of Women's Institutes.
The first Women's Institutes had been established by Bessie Jerome Spencer of Hawkes Bay in 1922, and had established a provincial confederation by 1925. By 1955 they had 36,000 members and there were more than fifty organisations.
There were three CWI in the Upper Hutt area: Maymorn, Upper Hutt, and Wallaceville. The Wallaceville CWI was the last to close.
The groups' activities revolved around social events and skill-sharing, with an emphasis on craft and traditional country pastimes.

Scrapbook:
Tape removal recommended.

Volume wrapped in tissue, purchase of phase box recommended.Processing notesThe scrapbook was acquired and processed earlier than the remaining records. It was subsequently incorporated.Custodial historyWallaceville Country Women's Institute records were held in a cupboard at the Wesley Centre, Upper Hutt, until the closure of the branch in 1995, when the Minutes were sent to the national office of the CWI.
Mrs Eadie, (past President) was Secretary at the time of closure, and took this scrapbook and a photograph album into her custody, until transferring the scrapbook to the Library in 1997.
The album will be transferred also later.
Presumably it was the earlier minutes which were sent to the CWI. The later minutes (described above) were donated by Christine Murray.
