Scope & contentThe collection contains a variety of items relating to William Burns' family and work. There are many photographs, both from within New Zealand and overseas, but most of these are in purchased scenic or 'tourist' albums. These date from 1876 forward. Provenance
HistoryJohn Burns worked as a platelayer and early correspondence is addressed to "Summit, Rimutaka". At some time the family lived at 10 or 55 Russell Street, Upper Hutt, an address close to the railway line. Mrs Burns lived here until the early 1960s, and William Burns for some unknown length of time afterwards.
John Burns was registered as unemployed from 1930-1932. A 1944 photograph shows a man in a wheelchair - possibly Mr Burns at a sanatorium.
One of the items indicates that William Burns trained or began training as a teacher in 1923. Other records show employment on various ships. He is mentioned on other documents as a storeman or clerk.
Provenance is obscured for some items (e.g. postcards) by the existence of a cousin named William ("cousin Willie"), as well as William Burns (later known as "Bill").
