Library 1; corner Main and Russell Streets; moving out, September 1956.

DescriptionMoving out of the Upper Hutt Public Library's first premises, in Benge's Building above the Red Robin Milk Bar and Quirke's Bookshop on the corner of Russell and Main Streets, on 14 September 1956. The Library had opened here on 4 July, 1952.

The new library premises at the other end of Main Street opened on 26 September, 1956.

Fifty fourth-form boys from Heretaunga College provided the workforce (another source says 'pupils from Heretaunga College classes 3i(1) and 3i(2) assisted with the move'); some formed the two chains on the stairs. Hazelwoods contributed biscuits; Stroud's provided boxes - ABC (Associate Bottlers) boxes for standard beer bottles - and the Mayor (Mr Slacke) and the Parks and Reserves Department supplied trucks.
The man standing on the tray of the truck at right is Town Clerk Gordon Cross.
