" My dad worked at Campbell's then they came out to Upper Hutt snd the mill was on a large piece of land starting from corner where Mendoza Mechanical [are] now but was just one big piece then....Thompson Campbell was running it then and when it was sold he bought the farm owned by my aunt and uncle Reg and Hilda Whiteman in Maymorn.. ..his son Grant now works for Professionals in Upper Hutt."

American sailors visit Campbell's Sawmill, 1925

Details

DescriptionAmerican sailors on a goodwill tour of the Pacific visited Campbell's sawmill in the Akatarawas in 1925. Motor enthusiast and inventor Howard Nattrass (at far left, standing by one of the rail tractors he developed and sold) had hired a bus to take the group touring for the day, including to the remote mill.

Also pictured in the group at right are Nattrass's nieces, Francis Benge (Francis or Fanny Hobbs or Mrs Alf Hobbs, eighth from right, holding flowers) and Marie Louise Benge (Rie Brasell or Mrs Cecil Brasell, fifth from right, in cream coat with fur trim).

Written on the tractor is "Nattrass patented Rail Tractor".

It was the US Navy's Pacific battlefleet that came to call, the goodwill tour their first visit to our shores since 1908. After annual manoeuvres near Hawaii and accompanied by eight movie and still photographers, Admiral Robert E. Coontz led more than 50 warships and 23,000 men on a cruise via Samoa to Australia and New Zealand. Departing from Melbourne on the 30th of July, the battleships, accompanied by divisions of cruisers and squadrons of destroyers, headed for NZ, where four sections of the fleet entered the harbours of Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers simultaneously. One of the ships, the USS Seattle, fired a salute off Oriental Bay as it entered the Wellington Harbour. The officers and men were greeted by the NZ Army Honour Guard at Pipitea Wharf, officially welcomed at Parliament and given a fancy reception at the Town Hall before being "extensively entertained" for the next week or so: these sailors made it to the Akatarawa Valley, others visited a Hallenstein Brothers clothing factory etc. The visit was said to do "much to further cement the friendly feeling existing between the United States and New Zealand".Date Taken21 August 1925Geotagnot specified
