By: Brian J. Pearce29th Mar 2014 9:31PMThis locomotive was built by the Avonside Engine Company Limited, Bristol, England, in 1875. When it entered service on 18 November 1878 it was as No. 38 on the Wellington Section. In 1882 the locomotive was renumbered H-4. It was renumbered again as H-202 in 1890 and retained this number until it was written off in March 1956. H-202 was scrapped at Silverstream in late-1957. In its early days of operation this locomotive was named Mount Tongariro.
As will be evident from the above information the photograph dates from the 1880s.
