PhotographerRevelle JacksonDescriptionOriginal description: 'Main Street looking east from corner of Station (later Geange) Street, early 1950s. Cars on street and parked. Pedestrians visible.' The date is incorrect; the cars have post-1964 number plates, and Hazelwoods has mid-1960s façade.
This is cropped from a 'Views of the City' series picture, P1-6113-8503, taken for the 'Upper Hutt City Proclamation May 26, 1966' brochure. That image was not used.

McKenzies (and earlier, MacDuff's as well) were rivals of Woolworths, before any of them took up grocery sales.

The Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) was on the corner of Main and Station (later Geange) Streets; the picture was taken from the bank's 1929 building, demolished in 1978, which had no verandah.
The bank had started as the bank of Australasia, in a building where the McKenzies building is seen. It moved to a new building on the corner of Station Street in August 1929, and later extended, closing the gap between it and McKenzies. This picture was proably taken from that extension.
