PhotographerLeo MorelDescriptionThe saleyards were on the south side of Queen Street, backing onto the Main Street shops. The July 12, 1967 'Leader' reprinted the January 12, 1950 'Upper Hutt Times' history of the saleyards' closure.

In spite of years of wrangling, Dalgety's had been entitled to a limited number of sales up to March 31, 1948; they may then have moved to Air Force land at Mangaroa; the old saleyards were allocated to car parking in May.

All the houses visible are State housing, with the charateristic concrete-tile roofs.

This view is along Savage Crescet, looking north; the houses at left and right were cleared for a Countdown supermarket and car park, but the two at the end survive.Date Taken1948Geotag^[1] Last edited by: Don McLeod
