He volunteered to serve in the Korean War, reaching the rank of Major, and was awarded a military M B E 1n 1953 for 'sterling qualities during a raid into enemy territory'.
He spent 1956-66 teaching in Fiji, and became Scholarships Officer for Fiji when he returned to New Zealand.
He had been president of the Upper Hutt Bowling Club, and the Upper Hutt Pakeke Lions.
