Description
This is part of a series of photos that were taken to document the rebuilding of the tube section of the Dunlop factory. Joining required heavy machinery. A base supported the table, which was in 2 halves. Each half had an arm which pressed down on the tube to hold it in place while heated knives cut off the ends of the tube. The fresh and warmed surfaces were then crushed together as the left half of the table moved to the right. Older machines used metal jaws, which kept the thickness of the tube the same, but it was found that this caused failures when the tubes were used in Radial ply tyres, and an extra strip of rubber had to be wrapped around the join to reinforce it. Esso developed a new machine which had rubber jaws, which allowed the extra thickness to be formed by the material in the tube, and Upper Hutt had one of their first machines (if not the very first). One side effect of having only one machine in use was that when things went wrong there were arguments where Technical blamed Engineering, and Engineering blamed Technical. The impasse was solved when Upper Hutt installed the Enjay machine from the Reidrubber factory that Dunlop had taken over. It turned out that the Esso was not making the joins with the required bulge, however the Enjay had much more pressure, and produced thick joins. Image 2 in this record is a diagram of the tube joining process.
