Hapai club 8th birthday, Rugby gymnasium; Māwai Hakona Māori concert party and audience

PhotographerRevelle JacksonDescriptionThis is not the current Hapai Club building. Although it does not look the part, this may be the Rugby Club gymnasium. The first Hapai club rooms were in Station Street, on land now taken over by Woolworths car park. They were probably small, and large events were held in the Rugby Club gymnasium.

A photo similar to this appeared in the June 2, 1965 "Leader"; there, the dancer's back is to the camera.

The Māwai Hakona Māori group was newly formed when they gave an afternoon performance for the Hapai Club in May 1963; they next performed for the friends of the Hapai Club in an evening in April 1964, and then gave an afternoon performance (presumably for members) in June.
