Pearce27th Jan 2014 3:14PMThe road in the foreground which is about to disappear under the railway to the right is Maymorn Road, not Parkes Line Road - the latter is on the opposite side and parallel to the railway. The new station on this deviation is out of sight to the right and was named 'Mangaroa' until 26 January 1959 when it was renamed 'Maymorn'.

PhotographerJ. W. KelleherDescriptionAerial photograph, taken from a Wellington Aero Club Gemini aircraft (in rough weather, with driving rain). The road in the foreground is Parkes Line Road (see correction in 'Recollections'). In the background is the entrance to the Rimutaka railway tunnel.

The train is far longer than normal, as this was the day of the tunnel's opening. A photograph taken at the opening shows the Prime Minister, Sidney George Holland, waving from a DF-class English Electric semi-streamlined locomotive; the country's first main-line diesel-electric class, introduced in 1954.

The tunnellers' huts were situated here while the tunnel was being built. Mangaroa station (later renamed Maymorn - see 'Recollections') is nearby.

The notes on the original photograph make no mention of date, location, or occasion!
