The early part of this volume contains information on music scores performed by the Choir. This information is arranged alphabetically and gives the name of the music piece, composer, "No.". There are columns ruled ready to record whether the music was performed at the 1sr - 6th concerts, but only those for the 1st - 3rd concerts have been completed.
The later part of the volume contains Male Voice Choir programmes. These programmes contain advertisements for local businesses, the titles and sometimes the words for songs in the concert, the names of members of the Choir, members of the Committee, and subscribers.
A handwritten note after the 14th programme states "This was the last concert conducted by S. W. Josland who entered Trentham Camp Feb 1940 for service overseas with 2NZEF 1940-46."

Scope & contentThe only record held in the Josland Collection is a volume relating to Mr Josland's involvement with the Upper Hutt Male Voice Choir (in 1998 the Upper Hutt Choral Society). HistorySydney Walter Josland was born in Christchurch in 1904. He gained a Certificate of Proficiency in Bacteriology (COP(Bact)) followed by a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree from the University of Otago and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Victoria University. He worked as a medical technician at Dunedin Medical School during the 1920s.
He arrived in Upper Hutt in 1929 to set up a biochemistry laboratory at the Wallaceville Animal Research Centre and later became Chief Bacteriologist at the Centre. In 1954 he resigned from the Wallaceville Animal Research Centre to become Chief Bacteriologist at the National Health Institute, Department of Health in Wellington, specialising in Salmonella and Leptospiral disease research. He was an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (ANZIC) and an Honorary Life Member of the New Zealand Association of Bacteriologists. Before World War II he was a Captain in the New Zealand Territorials. He went to the Second World War in the Twenty-fifth Battalion (Third Echelon) and returned with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was presented with an efficiency decoration for his service. From 1960 until his retirement in 1972 Sydney Walter Josland taught science at Heretaunga College in Upper Hutt.
Sydney Walter Josland played the organ and conducted the Upper Hutt Male Voice Choir. Whilst in Adelaide (for post-graduate training) in 1935, he played the organ at Adelaide Cathedral. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Upper Hutt and was also involved in Scottish Country Dancing. He spoke Arabic, French and Urdu. He died in Lower Hutt in 1991.

Location12dAccession0113ConservationRust from staples on the programmes is damaging the pages opposite.Custodial historyThis volume was deposited at the Upper Hutt Public Library by Ray Blackwood, at an unknown date, probably in the 1980s. It was noted in the collection in 1996 when additional arrangement and description was undertaken on archives collections, but was processed in 1998.
