Provenance
HistoryOlive Ward (nee Olive Mathew, 1921- ) from Cardiff, was educated at Howells School, Llandaff, in Wales. She trained as a primary school teacher including music studies during World War II, married New Zealand serviceman Henry Malcolm Ward, and came to New Zealand with him in 1946.
In January 1947 Mr Ward founded the firm of Ward & McCulloch (Barristers and Solicitors), Upper Hutt. The Wards settled in Silverstream, Upper Hutt, where they raised three children.
Olive Ward studied organ in Wellington with E.F.Wilson and later Maxwell Fernie, and composition with Doris Sheppard.
In 1958 she started a choir at St. Marys Church, Silverstream (Anglican).
From 1966, along with the choir, Mrs Ward was involved in fundraising for a pipe organ. Fundraising took the forms of garden fetes at the home of Dr C. M. Pickerill (and later of Alan and Rona Moss) in Blue Mountains Road, and publication of a St. Marys Cookbook (1967), a St. Marys Diary (1970), a bookmark and notelets, among other events. A George Crofts and Sons pipe organ was installed at St. Mary's Church in 1970.
Olive Ward taught at St. Patricks College, Silverstream, as Tutor of Organ for eleven years, and was Director of Music at St. Marys Church until her retirement in 1988. Mrs Ward continued to teach piano and organ privately until 1997.
Henry Ward died in 1988. Olive Ward married Tom Pearson, former Vicar at St. Johns Church (Anglican) Upper Hutt, in 1990.
