Provenance
HistoryWellington and Hutt Valley Agricultural and Pastoral Shows, or A&P Shows as they were known, were a major event in Upper Hutt from the 1950s to the 1970s.
The A&P Shows evolved from the Hutt Valley Pony Club and the earliest item in this collection dates from 6 April 1946 when the Hutt Valley Pony Club (Hon. Sec. A. Birkett) held a gymkhana at Maidstone Park.
The Hutt Valley Horse and Cattle Show had its first event on 7/8 Feb 1947 "under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Pony Club". The displays included horse events, a dairy stock and sheep section, sewing and fancy work, home industries, and the Hutt Valley Kennel Club All Breed Challenge Show.
In 1950 the name was changed to Hutt Valley Pastoral and Agricultural Association, and in 1951 to the Wellington and Hutt Valley Agricultural and Pastoral Association. In 1953 the Axemen's Carnival, which had been held in Maidstone Park since 1911, became part of the Show also.
Wellington and Hutt Valley A & P Shows were held until 1976, when the Association was wound up.
In the last year the following events were judged: Pig section, Axemen's Carnival, Goat section, Sheep section, Pedigree Dairy cattle, Horses.
The July 5, 1977 'Leader' covered the association's final meeting, and the liquidator's report; there was a surplus of $3373.35. Historical records would go to the Upper Hutt library.
