Scope & contentThe collection includes photographs taken for the Leader newspaper and some of its supplements, from the 1960s to mid-2005, an index to articles from September 1964 to December 1987, and yearly hand-written indexes from 1988 to 2007. Some of the photographs have yet to be sorted.
The Leaders from 1939 to September 1964 are on-line, and many of the photographs and all the hand-written indexes have been scanned and are on line. Not scanned, most sports photographs; people from outside Upper Hutt, speaking to special groups; weddings; makers' pictures of cars and other goods.
There are 35 mm greyscale negatives in four albums; with one sleeve for each issue from July 26, 1983 to June 21, 1993; each sleeve contains multiple strips of film, mostly 6 images in length.
There are also 35 mm colour negatives from 1988 to 1998, in strips of four in individual sleeves in processing envelopes, sometimes with prints. Each envelope is marked with the dates of the issue/s where images were used; the majority are dated 1993-1995.
There are also stock images of members of Parliament, local-body election candidates from 1989 to 2004, and parliamentary candidates for 1993-1999.
Leader supplements' titles include: 'Magic Millions' (1989-91), 'Summer in the Valley' (1991-94), 'Leader Weekender' (1992) 'Valley Weekender' (1993) and 'Experience Stokes Valley, Silverstream, Pinehaven', a monthly supplement, from 2003. Copies of most of these have not survived; one was found with the November 27, 2004 'Leader'. 'Experience' photos survive, but matching information does not.
There were also 'Upper Hutt Citizens'; the May 1988 one is bound with the May 1987 'Leaders'.Organisation & ArrangementEarlier photographs in the Arch Ref 35/2/1-1 series of photographic prints, have the original organization by the date of the Leader written on the reverse. This is the date of the Leader edition and the page number that the photograph is printed on. e.g. 24/3/87 06 or sometimes format 1987 03 24 06. Later in the series this was omitted by Leader staff but has been entered in square brackets on the reverse, AW Sept 2023.
