St John's Church (Trentham) (A103)
Content & arrangement
Archives TypeRecordsScope & contentThis record group contains archives from one of Upper Hutt's earliest churches, St. John's Anglican Church Trentham, at 561 Fergusson Drive.
The collection documents the growth of the Upper Hutt Parochial District and the resulting separation from St. John's of first St. Hilda's Church (built 1913, officially separated in 1955) and then St. Mary's Church (built 1931, officially separated in 1969). There are some records to do with the early development of St. Mary's Church but early records on St. Hilda's are limited to the registers of service.
The collection is a good record of the activities of St. John's Church from the 1890s to the 1990s, although there are some gaps where Minutes have not been transferred, and financial and correspondence records are incomplete. In addition, computer files of some sort have been in use since c1976 (see wrapping paper, 103/14/10) but none of these have been transferred.
Types of record in the collection include volumes of minutes, financial records and notebooks, subject files and loose papers, plans and blueprints and a few publications. There is a fairly comprehensive collection of Church pamphlets re 'stewardship' from the period c1960. The only photographs from St. John's are of stained glass windows in the Church.
A few items date back to the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s.
The records are titled in various ways over time: St John's Church Committee 1894-1895, St John's Vestry 1895-1908 or 1909, Upper Hutt Parochial District c1910-1955, Parish of Trentham 1955-1957, then St. John's Trentham.
The collection included records from several related organisations: St. Mary's Church, St. Hilda's Church, the Mothers' Union, Ladies Guild, Order of St John's Trentham, Combined Mission Committee, Upper Hutt Redundancy Support Group, Cemetery Board ... Those records which had been used by the St. John's Church administration have been described as series within this inventory. Those records which had been kept separately from the St. John's records have been described in separate inventories. Please refer to the inventories for Mothers' Union, Parochial District of Upper Hutt (1938-1985), Record Group 105, and for St. John's Ladies Guild (1949-1993), Record Group 106.
Part of item 103/17/11, 1983-1989 'Correspondence', concerns the efforts of Rev. Tom Pearson to re-constitute a cemetery register, which indicates that the original has been lost.Organisation & ArrangementRecords from different sources had been brought together before transfer. Some papers e.g. Minutes had been kept together, while others had been clipped with a title sheet or scrap of paper at some time.Records have been described as part of their original series wherever this could be determined. When items such as Minutes have been found within other folders (e.g. Silverstream Church Minute Book 1919-1921 included in Silverstream Account file) they have also been described as series in their own right, in addition to being listed by their location within the folder. The order of the series is by fullness as an official record.Early parish records were generally kept in volumes whether Minutes, letterbooks, account notebooks etc. There are indications of some early subject files from the period following World War One; a subject folder system was definitely in use from the 1970s on. In addition, possibly in preparation for the Parish Jubilee in 1961 or the 125th celebrations in 1986, several folders or groupings of 'historic' material were brought together or re-arranged. These have been retained as a separate series. Therefore financial records for example may be located in both volume (e.g. Series 9-12) and in folder format (e.g. 103/19/3 Financial papers. Balance Sheets etc 1963-1972 or 103/25/10/4 Accounts (partial), c1908).Several items were loose in the boxes in which they had been delivered (e.g. 103/10/14 Maps and plans, bequests, legal transfers) and their order has been determined by the archivist. As these records have no perceptible subject arrangement or heading they have been listed in more detail; however a full index is outside the processing time available at present.Records from other organisations which were transferred at the same time as the St. John's archives but had never been used by St. John's administration have been described separately. Please refer to the inventories for the Mothers' Union, Parochial District of Upper Hutt (1938-1985), Record Group 105, and for St. John's Ladies Guild (1949-1993), Record Group 106.
