Soroptimist International of Upper Hutt

Bound volumes, historical records of the club and its members from its conception in July 1975 until its closure in December 2018. The letter contained within the donation from Soroptimist International of Upper Hutt Inc. reads: ‘Soroptimist International was established in 1921. Soroptimists promote human rights and the status of women, socially, economically and politically. Soroptimists work for the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women. Soroptimists develop friendships amongst women both locally and globally. Soroptimist International of Upper Hutt Inc. was established in 1976. It became a vibrant club with dedicated members liaising with clubs worldwide. The local area benefitted from funds raised. Scholarships were awarded to local girls. Lobbying internationally promoted the rights of women worldwide represented by a number of women at UN forums. Swimathons, walkathons, quiz nights, fashion shows, garden evenings, film shows all helped raise funds and fun was had by members along the way. Sadly the club must now close. The members are aging and have not been able to attract new members. Out last meeting was in December 2018.’
