Pearce13th Feb 2014 3:36PMThe Queen and Prince Philip travelled to Masterton by train on the morning of Friday 15 January 1954; it was a non-stop journey - ie: they did not alight at Kaitoke. In the afternoon they returned to Wellington by road. On its return to Wellington as an empty service that afternoon the Royal Train was halted just north of Kaitoke station to enable the Royal Couple to have afternoon tea on board. A large crowd had gathered at the stopping place, so - after the Royals had boarded - the Royal Train was drawn forward to the more private precinct of Kaitoke station. After partaking of refreshments the Queen and Prince Philip alighted and rejoined the car to continue the journey to Wellington. The photograph shows the Royal Couple as they walked along the Kaitoke station platform to the car.
