"My Nanna took me on one of these last excursions. I remember someone having a window open in our carriage and as we came to a tunnel they didn't shut it quick enough so we had a carriage full of smoke."

DescriptionThe last train to head over the Remutaka Incline leaves Cross Creek station on 29 October 1955. From 1878 to 1955 the Wellington–Masterton railway line ascended (and descended) the steep Wairarapa side of the Remutaka Range between Cross Creek and Summit stations using Fell engines, which use horizontal wheels to grip a third, central rail. The Fell engines on the Remutaka Incline were the last in the world still operating when the Remutaka Tunnel opened in 1955. The Incline is now the Remutaka Rail Trail, a peaceful track for walkers and cyclists, with just a few visible remnants of its once busy past.
Fell locomotive H-199 - preserved at the Fell Locomotive Museum, Featherston - is heading the train here.
