DescriptionThe Royal Train carrying the Duke of Gloucester and his party climbing the Rimutaka Incline, just above Cross Creek, on Friday 4 January 1935. Five Fell locomotives hauled the train on the ascent to Summit.
The day's journey had seen the Duke travel from Palmerston North via the Wairarapa to Wellington. On arrival the Royal Train ran directly onto Pipitea Wharf where the Duke embarked on H.M.A.S. Australia to begin the South Island portion of his New Zealand tour.
