This portrait of railwaymen and others singing Auld Lang Syne, taken by a New Zealand Railways Publicity Dept. staff member, was apparently photographed from the steps of the Summit signal box. The man at centre with camera is Evening Post photographer Ian Mackley. The individual wearing a short-sleeved pullover at Ian Mackley's left is Frank Curtis Armstrong, a fireman who was based at Cross Creek (the depot at the foot of the Rimutaka Incline) from 1950 to 1955. He was not one of the ten rostered engine crew of the last train to ascend the Incline but was obviously keen to be present on this memorable occasion.
