DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
Original description:-
"In 1841 or 1842 the New Zealand Company decided to extend the Wellington road as far as the Taita Gorge. In conjunction with this a bridge was erected across the main river. This footbridge, afterwards commonly called the 'Willow Pattern Bridge', was designed by Mr Brees, and erected by Mr G. Compton. It was opened in April, 1844."
