DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
Twin stop-banks, Melling to harbour, were built between April 1901 and January 1903.
Original description:-
"As this was the day. of 'pick and shovel' methods, many men were employed. Some are shown here during their dinner-break. Apart from the labourers, foremen and surveyors, drivers were also needed for the large number of carts used on the job."
Work gangs on Hutt River bank.
Two men mounted, others seated, one woman.
Another copy of the picture has a 'Dinner Time' caption at bottom centre; both should acknowledge the Turnbull library.Date Taken1902
