DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
Twin stop-banks, Melling to harbour, were built between April 1901 and January 1903.
Original description:-
"The bank was built wide enough to take a horse and cart and was used as a road as construction work on the bank progressed further away from the pit."
Another picture shows 18 of these standardised carts, designed to carry river gravel, used to form stop-banks. Their box bodies could be lifted and swung sideways onto the stopank by a steam-powered crane mounted on an Aveling and Porter traction engine, and then emptied.Date Taken1902
