DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
In 1914, when the first echelon to go overseas rode from Featherston Camp to board their troopship, the then Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr Strand, arranged for the troops to be given refreshments as they passed through the Valley, the refreshments being Raspberry Vinegar made by Mr Strand himself.

The telephone poles have emerged. Each line represemts one subscriber, or mire than one on a 'party line'; the olperator would ring a Morse code letter for the suffix attached to the number; for insatnce a short and a long for A.
