DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
Original description:-
"Lower Hutt becomes a city, 1st February, '1941. Although it was wartime the new city decided to celebrate in style. Part of the celebrations included a parade of progress seen here coming off the Ewen Bridge."
The borough had reached 20 000 population; at the time, Petone and the Eastbourne area were separate entities.
Leading car is a Ford Model T.
