DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
In a book of James Bragge's photographs, published by William Main, this image is described as "probably the farm of the Udy family at Greytown in the Wairarapa". However, the proximity of the hill in the background raises doubt as to the locality.

The following original Hutt Valley history caption seems unrelated to the picture:-
"As the cultivated land of the Hutt was extended and the population of Wellington grew, requiring more produce, it became necessary to link the two communities with something more speedy than a bullock- or horse-drawn cart and more reliable than a small boat. The contract for the building of a railway was let to an English firm for the eight miles between Thorndon and Lower Hutt. At first a single-track railway, it was opened on 14th April, 1874. People, such as this wheelwright, Mr Henry Collett, and his family, came out to view the passing of the first train."Date Takenc1870s ?
