DescriptionOne of a set of 64 images from what must have been a mid-1950s film-strip presentation by Lower Hutt City Council on over 110 years of progress.
From the original description:-
"The main road from Wellington to the Hutt - which once possessed a toll-gate to levy travellers for the upkeep of the road - required widening and reconstructing. This was carried out by a body entitled the Hutt Road Board (established 1915), but although greatly improved, the road was soon inadequate to cope with the growing flow of traffic. The work on this section was taken over by the National Highways Board."
