"Archibalds is an art shop, a gallery: “THE CONCRETE GALLERY” and a private art school.
We opened in June 1990.
We are a place that has grown like Topsy and looking forward to our 21st Stone Carving Symposium next year, 2015.

Mary Archibald founded the business at 40, and the store was initially in Princes Street. In January 1992 it moved to 77 Main Street, as "Archibald's Art Supplies". The final address was 93-95 Main Street, previously occupied by Martin's toy shop..
All four of Mary's daughters worked in the shop; Tania would be there at the end.
Mary later became a city councillor.
Over the years, names for the gallery changed;

Archibald's - The Art Place by 2013
The Arts Place was a trust which ran the upstairs gallery and the workshops (Leader, January 17, 2001).
Archibalds ran week-long stone-carving symposiums at Harcourt Park, providing blocks of easily-carved Oamaru limestone so that people could 'have a go' and possibly sell their works. The series started in Anniversary Day weekend, January 2001.
March 6, 2002 'Leader'; Archibalds had bought Leslie's Cake Decorating Supplies' hire collection of formal and novelty cake tins and would provide other materials.
In the November 26, 2014 'Leader' Mary announced that she would close the shop after 24 years; she would turn 65 in June. Online shopping was advancing, and the retail trade was down.
She would continue as a teacher, and the annual January Archibald's stone-carving symposiums in Harcourt Park would continue.
In May 2015 Mary changed her name to Mary Amour, by deed poll (now officially a Name Change by Statutory Declaration).
