Heretaunga Players (Upper Hutt Repertory Society, to November 1965)
History
HistoryThe May 10, 1977 'Leader', in an article on Jack Haxton, wrote that from 1961, the Repertory Society had performed in the Druids' Hall (now part of Wesley Centre). The hall had to be fitted out with everything on the night before opening, and the previous Saturday.
The Repertory moved to Upper Hutt School hall in 1954 (64?), where they had a large stage and permanent lighting which they had installed.
The group's name changed to 'The Heretaunga Players' at the 17th annual general meeting, in late 1965.
A building fund had been set up, and led to the establishment of 'The Studio', in conjunction with the Art Society.
The Studio, owned jointly by the Players and the Art Society, was closed for stage productions for most of 1976, while alterations were being made; the March 1 'Leader' reported that 'Boeing Boeing' would open on March 5; the main auditorium needed finishing touches, and work was still outstanding in the wardrobe and storage areas.
A picture of the Studio entrance was printed in the next issue. There were three interior pictures on March 22.
The group celebrated its golden jubilee on September 5, 1999.
Among prominent members:-
Royce Doyle, BNZ accountant; farewell in the January 28, 1965 'Leader'.
