Mr Roberts was in the merchant navy and was away often. Left to go back to Scotland in the 1970s. Information supplied by Phillip Todd

Main street; the Brunswick private hotel, built in 1929 by Hannah Clark. [P1-790-3298]

DescriptionThis private hotel was built in 1929 by Hannah Clark. It was called the 'Armidale'. Part of the Upper Hutt mall is now built on the site. Hannah worked very hard as it had 18 rooms and she did all the washing and cooking - an almost endless job and very little time to herself; she would only have male boarders. Hannah sold it and later its name was changed.

This photo was taken the day before it was demolished; coincidentally Hannah's grandson Bernard O'Riley was the bulldozer driver.
