A-class 4-6-2 locomotive No. 604 with train on Mangaroa River bridge - 1953.

PhotographerDerek Cross DescriptionA-class 4-6-2 locomotive No. 604 heading a northbound ballast train across the Mangaroa River bridge in November 1953. The guard's van at the rear of the train has just exited the east (Mangaroa) portal of Cruickshanks Tunnel.
The locomotive was built by A. & G. Price of Thames and entered service on 10 July 1914. It was withdrawn and written off in February 1957.
The bridge, 370 feet (113 metres) in length, was built in the early years of the twentieth century to replace the original 1870s-era bridge. The section of line on which the bridge was situated was opened in December 1877 and was closed on 29 October 1955.
