"Ministry of Works private railway siding in the foreground. This was lifted and removed by members of the Silver Stream Railway - including the writer - early in 1976, almost forty years ago. All done with small track jacks (similar in size to a car jack) and picks and shovels - no mechanisation available to us in that era. We were all a little younger then... the building is currently tenanted by 'Danzworx'. An addition has been added on the north side which alters the appearance of the building."

DescriptionTrentham Camp Post Office, on its original site on the north side of Somme Road, Trentham Camp; photographed in December 1975.
Originally named 'Trentham Military Camp Post Office' (first established 5 October 1914), the name was changed to 'Trentham Camp Post Office' on 16 August 1948. This 292-square metre building was erected in 1940; in January 1983 it was moved to a new site on the opposite side of Somme Road. The Trentham Camp Post Office was closed on 28 January 1983 and the staff moved to a new Heretaunga South post office in a vacant classroom at Central Institute of Technology, leaving Post Office building staff, who were yet to find a new home.
A view similar to this was printed in the May 10, 1983 'Leader'. The building would soon be put to tender for demolition or removal. The picture was reprinted on July 5; the building had been purchased for $2611-51 by the Heretaunga Pistol Club who relocated it to a site near the rifle ranges at the back of Trentham Camp (it was pictured there on May 27, 1984, in the 'Leader'.
In the foreground the Ministry of Works rail siding, lifted (removed) in February 1976, can be seen. The rails went to Silver Stream Railway.

The September 4, 2002 'Leader' printed a two-page spread on the history of local post offices.
