DescriptionJames Cooley and his wife Mary with their family, in front of their farm homestead at Mangaroa, Upper Hutt.

Left to right: sons Albert and Issac (Isaac?) Ernest, parents Mary and James, daughter Ethel. Note what appears to be a tame owl or parrot on James' shoulder.

Part if not all of the farm was in the valley which extends southward from the end of Flux Road, and is still known as Cooley's Gully. The house was situated in Mangaroa Valley Road, and was approx 50-100 yards to the right of the Flux Road ending, and next to the river still known as Cooley's Stream.

In the photo the valley is hidden from view by the house. The photo would be dated about 1893/4, as the boy (Albert) on the left was born in January 1879. Years later, while they both worked at the Wellington wharves, he and a Peter Fraser became lifelong friends; Fraser in his later years became Prime Minister of New Zealand.Date Takenc1893Geotagnot specified
