The National Bank - the building at left beyond the service station - was opened on 8 September 1954. On the near corner of Princes Street the former site of the Kiwi Butchery was cleared and groundwork for a Bank of New Zealand building had commenced by July 1956. The photograph thus was taken between the two dates cited above.
The description has accordingly been revised to read 'mid-1950s'.

Until Brian Pearce worked on the date, estimates had been based on cars visible; the taxi at right is a 1955-1958-model Vauxhall, and was probably fairly new.
Also, number-plate patterns gave clues; plates were renewed every five years, and would change from light colour to dark or vice versa; and the marker separating the two groups of three numbers would change shape and position. The number plates shown are 1951-1956 pattern.

Brian's first comment on dating, added as a recollection:-
'The period during which this photograph was taken can be established from the following information. The National Bank - the building at left immediately beyond the service station - opened for business 8 September 1954. On the near corner of Princes Street the former Kiwi Butchery building - seen in this image - was replaced by a two-storey Bank of New Zealand building which opened late-1957. The photograph was taken after September 1954, but prior to July 1956 when groundwork for the bank building had commenced.'

This photo was reprinted in the January 7, 2014 'Leader'; Brian wrote to them, further narrowing the date. The corner building had been the Kiwi Butchery until November 1, 1954. When the butchery moved across the street, estate agent and auctioneer W H Morris moved in and used the building as an auction mart until the lease expired on April 7, 1956; his name is on the building.
By July 1956 both the butchery and Bank of New Zealand buildings had been demolished, and a new bank building was under way.
It wasn't clear in the printed picture, but closer inspection shows that W H Morris was advertising his final sale, so the picture probably dates from the first week of April, and may have been taken knowing that demolition was forthcoming.Date Taken1956 Last edited by: Don McLeod
