The National Bank - the building at left beyond the service station - was opened on 8 September 1954. On the near corner of Princes Street the former site of the Kiwi Butchery was cleared and groundwork for a Bank of New Zealand building had commenced by July 1956. The photograph thus was taken between the two dates cited above.
