Provenance
History"The End of an era: R.I.P. The Hapai Club 1957-2008
The Club was originally incorporated as a senior citizens support group and named from an acronym of its objectives to 'Help aged people and invalids'.
Founding activities included the gathering up of mobile inmates from the dozens of small rest homes that dotted the Hutt Valley to the providing of meals-on-wheels to house bound residents living at home. In these activities the Club was supported by a core of its own hostesses and volunteer drivers plus drivers willingly provided by both the Lions and Rotary clubs.
Regular formal entertainments were held plus a host of domestic activities including sing-a-longs, cards, pool, darts, beetles, bus and shopping trips, etc., or maybe just drop in for a cup of tea and a gossip with other members or the hostesses on duty every day. Incidentally Hapai was regarded as the first club of its type and the first to provide meals-on-wheels to its members.
The annual stall day at "St Joseph's corner" was the main fund raiser to cover running costs after regular stall days had earlier provided sufficient capital to buy and old house in Station Street as a clubrooms. The old house became part of Woolworths car park and was then swapped for the Clubs present site on Fergusson Drive.
A new purpose designed clubrooms was built and opened in 1966. the financial acumen, drive and quiet persistence of the then Club Secretary, the late dick Slacker, a former Mayor of Upper Hutt, ensured the new Clubrooms were opened mortgage free....
Usage of the clubrooms is very high as some 20-25 small community groups call the clubrooms home at any one time....
Hapai members changed the base of the Club's acronym to 'Health and play are important' some years ago....
One could say that Hapai was born in an era of negative aging and need not survive in its present form in the new era of positive aging....
Hapai is proud to have filled a huge gap in Upper Hutt's communal society over the fifty years of most need and lovers its flag with some pride at this time...." - Mary Richardson, President
