6B was almost certainly pupils who had passed School Certificate at the end of their fifth-form year, and were now attempting University Entrance examinations.
For School Certificate, you needed passes in four subjects including English, with an average of 50% and a minimum of 30 or 31%.
6A (later known as Form 7) was for students with University Entrance, sitting National Boarding Bursary and Scholarship exams.
