DescriptionThis plaque is probably placed on the site of the first homestead.
The family's block of land was enormous; the family supported the Catholic Church, and donated the church and school grounds.
A different cast-bronze plaque, commemorating the hotel, was announced in the March 6, 1995 'Leader; it was one of an initial group of seven, and as worded 'On this site in June 1849 James Brown established the valley's first hotel. It was initially called The Halfway House, then The Shepherd and eventually the Criterion. The first Town Board office was later built here.
