DescriptionThis plaque is in the entrance of the building built to house Gerry Marshall's painting, decorating, and glass business; he sold it and retired in 1989.
Gerry Marshall had started business in 1956, on the eastern corner of Main and Logan streets in October 1956, crossed main Street to the Baigent's garage building in 1963, and moved to this building in 1970; a proposed pedestrian precinct would have made moving goods difficult. The council had offered the site for around $40 000, and the premises cost $80 000.
The upper floor was initially a ten-pin bowling alley, from 1971; later it was used by a series of gymnasium franchises, including Les Mills, UptownGym (mentioned on the plaque), and CityFitness.
In the October 17, 2015 'Dominion Post' the Lifestyle Health and Fitness Club announced it was going into liquidation; it had begun in Lower Hutt in 1990, and added Upper Hutt in 2003. The same article appeared in the October 21 'Leader'.Date Taken16th January 2015
