Andrew Chaplow
Biography
Biography'Recollect' has two proof sheets of Andrew Lawrence Chaplow's images of the 1968 Hazelwoods Christmas parade.
In the 1970s, he worked at Hazelwoods; there is at one photo of him taken by Revelle Jackson; he was modelling a fur coat.
He may have taken the series of 'Leader' pictures of the April 22, 1983 visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales; some colour prints were definitely his.
Elected president of the retailers' association in 1987; re-elected to continue in September 1990.
He ran a series of Plunket baby-photograph competitions; he would take a set of photos for each of up to 300 babies; the 1994 charge of $12 for a five-minute session included a single 127 x 178 mm colour print, and others could be ordered in various formats. There could be over 300 portraits on display in the Mall, with the public offered a vote for each cent donated; 1988 was one of the first competitions, and raised $4000; $21 000 had been raised in seven years. The winners were often printed in the 'Leader', and some survive in the collection. A picture of Andrew and stands exhibiting the 1988 set of pictures, each enlarged to about 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm) was printed in both the 'Leader' and the 'Upper Hutt Citizen' of April 14-15.
In September 1992, Ian Wallis closed his business and stood for the city council.
In November (same year?) he took over Mitchell Photography; it was later sold to Andrew Chaplow
Election candidates with a dark upper background are probably his; a set of Nicola Meek has been positively identified, and a group of Rimutaka Licensing Trust pictures from 1992 has a similar background.
Andrew and Karen Chaplow sold the photographic business to Tim Bradley in May 2000; he may have traded as Fripps Photography, which went into receivership in October. Andrew Chaplow had been authorised to dispose of negatives. Mitchell wedding photos would be free of charge; Chaplow ones might carry a fee.
From late in 2000, Chaplow's ran a gallery in Logan Street; exhibitions were mentioned in the 'Leader' in 2001.
Chaplow's Custom Picture Framers is still in business in 2016.
