DescriptionThe street number has been allocated to keep pictures in street order.
Since this picture was taken, the two blank bays on the wall at left have gained a mural, with a kea's(?) head prominent.
Shops on the left include men's and women's hairdressers.
The first bay of the building at right was part of Hazelwoods department store; the first building on this site was probably J A Hazelwood's second building; he built a more permanent building next door around 1906; possibly on the site of his first building.
The wooden two-storey second building was sold to Benge & Pratt, and was destroyed in a fire which began near midnight on Saturday March 28, 1914, and the explosion, blamed on illegally-stored gelignite, which followed; eight men died as a result.
After the fire, Hazelwood added an even larger building to the east, and also extended west to cover the fire site.
The whole Hazelwoods frontage is occupied by the Ministry of Defence, hence the blanked windows.Date Taken25th December 2012
