DescriptionBeaurepaires was the retailing branch of South Pacific Tyres, and was named after Sir Frank Beaurepaire, a pre-war Australian Olympic swimmer, and the founder of Olympic Tyres (later merged with Dunlop Australia). Australia's Dunlop Olympic acquired Dunlop New Zealand in 1984 and the parent company changed its name to Pacific Dunlop in 1985.
South Pacific Tyres was formed in 1987 as a joint venture between Pacific Dunlop and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
Goodyear took over South Pacific Tyres in 2006.
Goodyear Dunlop is now wholly owned by Goodyear.
Anthony Motors used these premises from the 1960s, and had franchises for Rootes Group Hillman cars and Commer commercial vehicles, and Dodge cars; they also had a large caravan business; they were succeeded by Kerr Wynne Motors. Digby's Furniture moved in in September 1985 after Kerr Wynne moved to the site southwest of the main Street/Fergusson Drive roundabout (now Burger King).
At bottom centre a telecommunications cabinet; originally Saturn; then TelstraClear and Vodafone.
All were originally plain buff, and were frequently tagged; artists were allowed to decorate them individually; here is an example; an American car's front, with a KIWIA5 registration plate.
Beaurepaires Upper Hutt opened at 1066 Fergusson Drive, and moved to this site early in 1991.
In December 1964 the Electric Power and Gas Board attempted to use the Public Works Act to acquire this land for an office and showroom; they eventually took temporary premises in Russell Street, and moved into the former council offices and library after the new civic centre opened.Date Taken3rd February 2016
