Childs, Brian; policeman and Elvis Presley impersonator.
Biography
BiographyMuch of this comes from a February 6, 2000 'Leader' article.
Brian was born and raised in Upper Hutt.
After graduating as a policeman he spent five months in Lower Hutt, then 16 years (the 'Leader' said months) in Upper Hutt.
In 1987 he was Upper Hutt's fittest policeman.
Brian entered his first “Stars in your Eyes” competition in 1992 in Wellington which he won.
In 1993 he entered another “Stars in your Eyes” Competition which he was fortunate enough to win also. In 1995 this led Brian to go to Rotorua and enter the February “Search for Australasia’s Best Elvis Impersonator”. His dreams all came true, Brian won the competition and was soon on his way to Memphis, Tennessee to see the home of Elvis Presley, Gracelands.
He was pictured on his return. The advertised $10 000 trip for two had been watered down to $2700 for one, but with the help of TV's 'Fair Go' it had been reinstated with a few extras.
The competition attracted sixty entrants; Brian was in a group selected to perform on the first day. The audience was only 150, and the 'Leader' had no hint of any placing; the event ran over several nights.
In 1998 he was appointed community constable, and appeared in the 'Leader' several times in that role; he was later promoted to senior constable..
He was pictured as Elvis in November 2000, driving a ride-on mower which was travelling from Invercargill to Auckland, raising funds for Victim Support.
He applied for a transfer to Lower Hutt, and then ran into difficulties with his police workload, and stressful situations, including armed events and problems with written permissions to do his Elvis impersonations; even when he had written permission, he had been questioned.by police.
He and his wife also ran an Omegatrend business; an Australian franchise business selling skin care and cosmetics, food and nutrition, body, hair, sun and dental care and household cleaning and homecare products;
he was now told to cease that activity. (The multi-level marketing parent company went into liquidation in mid 2007.)
Brian's case reached a Sunday newspaper in September 2001.
He resigned from the police in 2002; the article said he would continue the Omegatrend business and the Presley impersonations.
On June 28, 2014 he beat about 16 others to win the professional category of the Elvis Down Under competition at the Petone Working Men’s Club.
In 2014 he bought a Tall Poppy real estate franchise; Upper Hutt's first.
