This would be the last of three 'homecoming concerts, following those in Christchurch and Auckland; she would be accompanied by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Hopkins.
85,000 tickets were sold at Bank of New Zealand branches throughout the region on the Thursday and Friday; profits went to the Child Cancer Foundation. Special trains would be running; 50,000 cars would be controlled by 500 volunteer marshals.
Entertainments would start at 5, with Dame Kiri on stage from 8 to 9:40.
The following week's 'Leader' reported that 65,000 had come, in spite of the rain, and printed four pictures of Dame Kiri plus an aerial shot of the crowd, and an interview.
A week later, the paper printed two colour pictures, and announced that the three concerts had raised $268,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.
The July 24 'Leader' reported that the council had billed the organisers $16,000 for a clean-up; $14,000 had been spent on removing two mounds to improve visibility, and laying topsoil, but after discussion it was agreed that the removal benefited the city, and that the organisers would be charged $187.28 for repairs and power.
