An obituary was printed in the September 10, 1991 'Leader'.
After obtaining a degree in music at Otago University he joined Otago Medical School as a medical technician.
he was invited to set up a biochemistry laboratory at Wallacville, and moved there with his young family (Wife Elsie Navaro Josland and probably his son). They initially lived on the campus, and were so pestered for advice on animals' ailments that he refused to have a telephone in the house to the end of his days.
The obituary does not mention that he was the founding conductor of the Upper Hutt Home and School Association Male Voice Choir, which gave its first public concert in December 1933;it survives as the Hutt Valley Singers.
He 'relinquished conductorship, owing to pressure of other business' in late 1938, and last conducted the choir in December 1939.
He entered Trentham Camp in February as a Territorial Army captain, and joined the second NZEF, ended the war as a lieutenant-colonel, and was awarded the efficiency decoration.
He returned to Wallaceville.
There are no further references to any musical activity.
In 1954 he was appointed chief bacteriologist of the National Health Institute, specialising in salmonella, retiring in 1960.
Hethen taught science at Heretaunga College , retiring finally in 1972.
He was a very respected member of the Masonic lodge, contributed to Scottish country dancing, and was an executive member of the NZ Association of Bacteriologists, and was fluent in French and Arabic.
He was survived by his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
