DescriptionOne of the first group seven plaques announced in the March 6, 1995 'Leader', to be installed that week.
'On this site in June 1849 James Brown established the Upper Valley's first hotel. It was initially called the Halfway House, then the Shepherd and eventually the Criterion. The first Town Board office was later built here.'
The plaque is placed in front of 142-144 Main Street, which was a Hugh Wright's menswear branch. It was installed on March 8, 1995, and is pictured wit Hugh Wright's manager and the Mayor, Rex Kirton, in the March 13 'Leader'.
