Biography
BiographyThe April 29, 1970 reported his appointment as general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department.
The July 25, 1978 'Leader' reported hat he had been a Justice of the Peace, and that he had retired on March 31 as general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department, after eight years.
The Medic Alert trust provided bracelets identifying people with medical conditions; information was avalable from the foundation or from wallets carried by the bracelet-wearers. The 1986 system used a microfiche reader-printer provided by the Fletcher trust to give rapid access to the 50 000 members' records.
John Hartstonge was elected chairman of Medic Alert in September 1980. The September 16 'Leader' report on the annual general meeting mentioned his praise of the founding chairman and full-time director, Seymour Young, who had created an organization which had grown to 20 000 members. The international foundation's president presented him with an International Voluntary Medic Alert Award in October 1989 during a visit where he learned about the New Zealand computer system and database. John had received a President's Award a few years earlier.
In the April 5, 1983 'Leader' he was pictured as director of Acma Industries, with Prime Minister Robert Muldoon, at the Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce AGM in which he retired as president.
In March 1984 he succeeded Sir John Plimmer as president of the Wellington Medical Research Foundation.
In mid-1985 he was elected chairman of the Wellington Regional Chambers of Commerce, which covered Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wairarapa.
He became Director of the Upper Hutt Promotion Council in 1986, and retired as executive director of the Upper Hutt Promotion and Development Board in 1994.
The April 23, 1997 'Leader' reported that he had died in a car crash north of Taupo on April 16; the funeral was delayed while his widow recovered from her injuries. The May 14 'Leader' printed a portrait and an obituary.
At the time of his death he as also chairman of the Central Region Economic development Board, a Central Institute of Technology Council member, and an executive member of the Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce. Former posts included New Zealand Travel Commissioner in London, deputy chairman of the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, board member of the Tourist Hotel Corporation, chairman of the New Zealand chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association and first executive director of the Upper Hutt Promotion and Development Board.
He had been awarded an MBE in 1990.
Speakers at the funeral included the Minister of Tourism, Rob Talbot, and the mayor, Rex Kirton.
A series of John Hartstonge Business Achievement Awards was named in his honour; Recollect has pictures of the 1999 and 2000 recipients.
