"My 1st day as a third form daygo at St. Pat's was elephant race day. Lived in Silverstream with my grandmother, uncle and cousin. 1963 a great memory"

DescriptionMistakenly identified as part of the celebrations of Upper Hutt City Status, 28 May 1966.

This image is scanned from a better-focused print than the first acquired, and with four times the pixels. The other image provided the date and the information on the event, which ave been confirmed form the library's on-line archive.

On 6 February 1963 the Upper Hutt Jaycees held a Grand Elephant Race down Main Street to raise funds for a filtration plant for Maidstone Pool. Elephants were borrowed from a visiting circus. Sitting on the elephants, left to right:

Les Tickner, proprietor, Quinn's Post Hotel;

Mr Downs, proprietor, Provincial Hotel and Consolidated Plastics;

Bryan Ross, Anthony Motors, Rosscars Toyota;

Justin du Fresne, broadcaster, 2ZB radio station;

Don Davidson, proprietor, Totara Lodge hotel;

Arthur Clouston, Clouston's Sawmill.

Standing left of centre, facing the camera, with tie, is hardware shop owner (and later local politician) Stuart Macaskill.
